While CBD is legal in some countries, hemp is legal in nearly all countries. There are a few important questions and points when it comes to traveling with CBD.
Domestic Travel with CBD
Thanks to the Federal 2018 Farm Bill, travel within the United States by car, train, bus or airplane should offer no problem for you if you have CBD in your possession. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances list and recognized it as a product of agriculture. CBD from hemp is permitted in all states as long as there is less than .3% THC. I penned should offer you no problem because there are always odd outlier situations. To avoid any complicated situation, request a COA from the manufacturer of your CBD product that is tested and clearly states the CBD is from hemp and there is no THC in the finished product.
What if My CBD is Not from Hemp?
If you have CBD oil made from marijuana, we recommend you leave that at home, purchase products with CBD made from hemp to avoid any complications.
Can I Bring CBD on a Plane?
TSA.gov has put together a search engine that is super useful when figuring out what one can and cannot bring in a carry on bag. I searched ‘Shampoo’ and the results were a complete breakdown of how much shampoo, conditioner, gel and dry shampoo are allowed on a carry on vs a checked in bag. When I searched CBD, the result showed medical marijuana is allowed on carry ons as well as in a checked bag. Whether you are wondering about how much baby formula you can bring on your carry on or how much CBD oil, this is your link. That all being said, know that the screening TSA Officer has a lot of power in deciding what passes through so smile and be nice.
TSA Statement About Flying with CBD
Marijuana and certain cannabis infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA. (See the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115-334.) TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state or federal authorities.
TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.
International Travel with CBD
International travel with CBD is not out of the question but it is important to research the governing laws in the country or countries you are planning to travel in. A quick Google search or call to the country’s consulate general will point you in a safe and informed direction. Again, to avoid any complicated situation, request a COA from the manufacturer of your CBD product that is tested and clearly states the CBD is from hemp and there is no THC in the finished product. That way there are no questions about what is in the bottle. This is purely anecdotal but we have had a lot of friends and customers report no issues when traveling domestically or internationally with CBD Oil and CBD topicals. We have even heard stories of long plane flights and the Rose Hydrosol being passed around the cabin for freshening up.
No CBD in Disneyland!
In 2019, a 69 year old grandmother from North Carolina was arrested at the entrance of Disney World in Florida because CBD oil was found in her purse. The park employee that searched her purse regarded the CBD oil as an illegal substance despite the grandmother noting that CBD was legal in Florida and the CBD oil was suggested by her doctor for osteoarthritis in her legs.
The Disney World employee continued with her arrest even after a field test revealed there was no THC in her CBD oil. The grandmother was detained and handcuffed in the presence of other tourists, her husband, their disabled adult daughter and two adopted children. She was then taken to the sheriff’s office, where she was forced to strip and undergo a body cavity search. After 15 hours, she was released on $2,000 bail. Eventually, the charges were dropped.
Public pressure hoped that Disney would at minimum apologize for how they treated this woman and at best, reevaluate how CBD is classified and handled. No, Disney never issued an apology and their views of CBD as an illegal substance remain. In fact, sit with this reality: CBD and Medical Marijuana are banned from all Disney properties and the police will be called if any park goer is found in possession while opioids are permitted and alcohol is sold at the parks.
Should I travel with a COA?
Traveling with CBD should not be an issue if where you travel recognizes CBD and / or hemp as legal. Never-the-less, traveling with the manufacturer’s Certificate of Analysis is never a horrible idea. Just request it! Most will be emailed so it can sit digitally available should one ever ask.
Cat CBD for Travel. Dog CBD for Travel.
Travel can truly stress out your cat or dog. CBD can definitely help chill them out so the experience is less marked with anxiety. In fact, we have heard from many customers who have offered Calm for Pets to their furry friends that they were able to complete cross country moves with far less stress than anticipated. This all makes a lot of sense, our pets have double the receptors than we do, CBD as a stabilizer and relaxant is very effective for pets as a result.
