The term Homeostasis is frequently used in conjunction with CBD. It is likely you have heard or read that the molecule CBD promotes homeostasis in the body. The short definition of homeostasis is balance. We thought it might be helpful to explore what homeostasis is further and why it is important for well-being.  


Homeostasis is an example of dynamic equilibrium. When the body’s systems are functioning and maintaining a stable environment, there is homeostasis. Maintaining homeostasis requires that the body continuously monitors its internal conditions. A biology textbook could describe homeostasis as the state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. Homeostasis is the condition of optimal functioning and regulation despite the external environment. 

Homeostatic Range

Homeostatic range is a term used to describe where a living organism’s optimal health rests. Two examples of homeostatic range that you are most likely well acquainted with are blood sugar levels and body temperature. Suppose you eat a chocolate donut and your blood sugar raises. Your body responds in all sorts of ways with insulin and glucagon to steady blood sugar levels. This state of steadiness is often referred to as a homeostatic range. The same happens with body temperature. Imagine you are in a hot room, your body will respond from the hypothalamus region of the brain with feedback urging your body to adjust breathing rate, blood sugar level and metabolic rate. Perspiration is one of the more obvious attempts the body will make to maintain homeostasis in regards to temperature. 

Other examples of homeostatic range include: The pH of blood which has a very narrow homeostatic range of: 7.35 to 7.45, the lymphatic system works to maintain homeostasis with defense, fat absorption and fluid balance, nerve impulses, blood pressure, the respiratory system and osmoregulation (excess water, salts). This is but a few of the examples of systems in the body at work to maintain regulation.

The body’s responses to diet and / or the external environment with attempts to maintain homeostatic range depend on the internal systems working at their best.

Lack of Homeostasis

Imbalance occurs when the body’s cells experience a deficiency, such as poor nutritional choices or when cells are exposed to toxins. Stress can also wreak havoc on an otherwise balanced system. A system out of balance results in disease. Systems disrupted result in disorder. Returning to the example of blood sugar levels: When there is not homeostasis and the body cannot maintain the homeostatic range one devastating result can be diabetes.  Maintaining adequate glucose levels in the blood are necessary for survival.

How to Maintain Homeostasis

To maintain a healthy system that can function optimally one must take care of the systems / the body. A healthful diet, ample sleep and cardio based exercise are a few of the ways to maintain a healthy body / healthy systems.
