CBD and Sleep

why we sleep

We are frequently asked if CBD can help with sleep. Studies and feedback from customers report that yes, CBD can assist with sleep homeostasis.

The Importance of Sleep

We recommend the book Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker PH.D. If you prefer podcasts, there is a great interview with the author that dives deep into the book’s contents and research findings on Found My Fitness. Frankly, our minds were blown from the findings. A good night’s sleep goes far beyond simply waking up refreshed.

The University of California neuroscientist found that we need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Receiving less than seven hours will result in impairments being measured on the brain. People will claim that they can function with less sleep but in truth, there is a rare gene that will determine less sleep required and one has a better chance of being struck by lightning than having that gene.

A lack of sleep is one of the most significant determiners of whether or not one will develop Alzheimer’s disease. When we deep sleep, we flush waste proteins that are toxic to brain cells. One of the toxins is beta amyloid – which is responsible for the underlying mechanism of Alzheimer’s disease.

Sleep deprived people experience higher levels of loneliness and are less likely to interact with others. Keep in mind, regular feelings of loneliness can increase mortality by up to 45%. The study also looked at the brain activity of those who were sleep deprived while they watched a video of a person walking toward them and revealed increased brain activity in areas that seem to light up when a person feels their personal space being violated. In short, people that are sleep deprived are socially toxic to those that are not sleep deprived.

Lack of sleep will determine comprehension and retention levels during the day. The ability of your lungs to expire CO2 and inhale oxygen decreases with less sleep. Lactic acid production increases as well as the risk of physical injury.

How CBD Can Assist With Sleep

When the body is healthy and in balance, sleep will arrive easier. Matthew Walker further outlines in the book and podcast, the stages of sleep and their relevance. Walker concludes that all stages of sleep are important. One such stage, N-REM is a precursor to REM sleep and interestingly, this Government study found that endocannabinoid signaling through CB1 is necessary for N-REM stability. Ingesting CBD will signal the CB1 receptor. Another Government study reports that CBD can increase dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine levels play an important role in sleep regulation. With promising studies such as these, more studies will be useful on CBD and sleep health.

Matthew Walker addresses CBD as a sleep aid and cites lack of studies but notes that CBD could be a great candidate for sleep balance. Please add this podcast or book to your list, it is crucial information. We love and appreciate feedback. How are you sleeping?
